Are you Using your Weight as a Distraction from your life: From FAT to Flab
It's less than 60 days into the New Year and I often wonder how many of my female peers find themselves consumed with thoughts of their thighs, their hips, if they'll ever walk up a flight of stairs, again, without getting out of breath or if they'll ever have a flat stomach again? How many women are buying the clothes they really want versus the ones that will fit. How many of us are comparing ourselves either to our former younger selves or to other women; regardless of if these other women are celebrities or the girl next door. No pun intended.
I find myself more consumed with all of the above thoughts more now that I'm in my 40's than I ever did in my 20's. I wonder if living in L.A...LaLa land has anything to do with this. After all, I didn't even know I had small breast until I moved here. I had no idea. It was pointed out to me by a 7th grader I was teaching Hip-Hop dance to. WTFreak!
I moved here from Houston, Tx, over 17 years ago, where women my size...size 8 up to size 14,16 and 18 were considered thick and fine my men. Where are those men today? lol. More importantly, why are WE letting the opinion of men dictate what size we should be? Are WE not the trendsetters in our health and fitness lives?
As a personal fitness trainer, writer and youth advocate, I meet many women, both young and not so young, who have questions about how they can lose this or lose that, tighten this and tighten that. I no longer give them generic eating solutions, tips or suggestions. I now spend time asking them questions like:
. Who told you how you look isn't okay?
. What are you eating? When? and Why?
. If I told you that you could get the fat off and keep it off, do YOU believe you can?
. What is your ideal of fit? etc.
This next statement may be a hard pill to swallow; however, if people really knew what it took to get and stay fit, they wouldn't do it. That is why there is such a disproportionate number of overweight women and children in this country; especially in the African-American and Latin communities. We're literally eating ourselves to death. It amazes me how often I see financially challenging people being the most overweight people. That's because cheap and processed food kills.
Diets don't work. What works is a change in your belief system. What works is getting REALLY honest with yourself. What works is putting in the time and doing the work. What works is asking Yourself the right questions. We all know the answers. However, we're not asking the right questions. Some of us are using our weight as an excuse not to live a full life. Some of us are using are weight as an excuse not to date. Some of us are using our weight as a reason to not get out there and be our Fierce, Fabulous and Amazing women WE are.
So, here's your assignment if you are ready to accept this mission. Ask and answer these questions for yourself:
. What doe the fit, healthy, fit fabulous and sexy version of YOU look like?
. What kind of clothes does she wear?
. What kind of person doe she date or is married to?
. What kind of books does she read?
. Where does she work?
. Where does she live
. What does she do for FUN?
. How does she walk?
. What do I want? What am I willing to do to get what I want?
Now, have the strong and deep desire to create her. Rome was not built in a day; therefore your new self will take time. As long as you have breath in your body, you may as well enjoy the journey. After all, shouldn't it be fun. Success is NOT convenient...but Possible for those who believe they can have it.

Are Organics ONLY for White People?

I know what ya'll are thinking!!! Oh No she didn't. This topic came up for me today while debating on if I should replace the peanut butter at the house with Whole Foods crunch peanut butter or Organics brand crunch peanut butter; as my housemate buys ALL organic. And yes...he's Caucasian. lol.
Since embarking on my juicing journey; he's shared with me the importance of buying ONLY organic fruits and veggies for the juicing. In order for me to Grow and expand my life condition, I know I have to be open and coachable. I questioned nothing and did what the man said. All the while, not allowing my budget to deter my desire to be healthy and more fit. So, I've been buying Organic kale, chard, lemons, apples, celery, ginger; as well as peanut butter from the Santa Monica Co-Op. I have to tell you, I notice the difference in the fruit. I can actually smell the lemon and the apples. While buying a few organic lemons from Whole Foods today; that cost $.99 each, the cashier at checkout said, "Oh my goodness, do you smell that?" Smell what I lamented? "The lemons", she said. "They smell soo good". And they did.
Additionally, while doing my research on how WE can prevent and/or cure cancer, It's been confirmed to me me the reason why It's important to include organics into your weekly or monthly shopping regime. Now don't go all haywire on me. I didn't say to eat ONLY organics; however, try it for yourself. See this is the deal with OUR soil:
. Toxicity starts in the soil and in he plants that grow in; via poisonous pesticides, fungicides, herbicides and other chemicals used in COMMERCIAL agriculture
. These pesticides permeate our produce in such a way, that it can't be removed simply by washing the leaves
. Unless we eat organically grown foods, our intake is primarily poisoned, toxic and artificial
Now, do I think Organic foods are ONLY for White people? Hell to the naw. I think WE think ONLY white people can afford to eat organic grown food. This is partly true and partly and illusion. However, I have only personally met a small handful of black people or African-American's and Latinos who eat organically grown food; however, They...We are out there. Organics are for ALL people; however, more importantly, it's the conscious people who are eating organics more than ANY people. Or, it's the people who are ill and decide to allow their bodies to do what it naturally wants to do; which is heal itself form the inside out with the right foods. We have to wake up, be accountable to our own health and wellness. And, we have to do our homework or at least stay open to it.
Lastly, there has been an ever increasing use of artificial fertilizers used in our soil; which only provide the soil with (3) out of approximately (5) minerals; which are:
. Nitrogen, phosphorus and potassium.
This artificial crap isn't providing our soil with the other healthy minerals, trace elements needed to keep OUR soil fertile, healthy and loaded with enzymes.
What do WE need to do? For starters, stop thinking WE can't afford organic foods. Change our belief system. Check out your local farmers markets. Look into joining a local Co-Op, if you have one in your hood. If not, create a small Co-Op with a few of your conscious friends. Lastly...but not least, make more money so you can afford to eat ALL organic. (LOL) That, for now, is my solution in addition to eating less food and drinking more of my foods in the way of juicing and meal replacement shakes that have the nutrients that I know my body needs to keep it looking and feeling the part.
